Happy Pepero Day!

November 11 is a special day in Korea: Pepero Day! It's named after chocolate dipped pretzel sticks (yum!) called Pepero. On this day, boyfriends and girlfriends give each other little gifts of the pretzel sticks, and the stores have been filled with special displays composed of fancily wrapped Pepero packages. I'll see if you can guess why November 11 was chosen as Pepero Day.

What a sweet idea! I would guess that 11/11 is shaped like 4 pretzel sticks and that's why the date? Looks like you two were enjoying yours.

That is the silliest holiday I have ever heard of. But it reminds me of the Korean orthographic system - the characters approximate the way the mouth is shaped to form the sounds! In this case the Western number system neatly approximates . . . the chocolate covered pretzel sticks we love!

My sis is in the hospital and really sick. I have been at my funniest and most charming in an effort to make her smile, but nothing has worked. Until I told her about PEPERO DAY!

Yes, Mom is right. Pepero Day is November 11 because 11/11 is shaped like pretzel sticks. I would be sour about the blatant commercialism if chocolate-covered pretzels weren't so freakin' good!
